And now, O Israel, what
does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk
in all his ways , to love him, and to serve the Lord your God with all
your heart and with all your soul. Deuteronomy 10 |

As we prepare for the season
of Lent let's ask ourselves, what is the significance of this Lenten
Season? In our world troubled by war, poverty disease, terror and
injustice what difference does a season make? What do our rites, rituals
and seasonal calendars have to do with the larger world around us. How
do they help us make sense of our daily lives in a bustling, hectic,
noisy world? There are three disciplines of Lent to consider; prayer, fasting, and works of love. As we consider these disciplines we need to put them in perspective. How do we encompass the people of the world in our individual lives as we journey through Lent? We can make it simple and quiet, thus helping ourselves as well as others. Take a time every single day to quietly talk to God, asking him how you can in some fashion contribute to an end to the poverty, terror and injustice in the world. Be sure to leave time in this conversation to listen to what God has to say. You will be helped in your life because you have taken time to slow down, to be quiet, to think of others to listen and to really be aware of God's presence in your life right here in Tucson. We can fast for the whole world by making an effort to live simply. Make small reductions in spending, begin a modest healthy diet, and consciously bring relaxation and recreation into your life right here in Tucson. You will find you have more energy to help those who need your help in your backyard and in the community around you. As you pray and slow down, making time for yourself, you will find yourself eagerly engaging in simple works of love. You may truly find joy in your family, your friends and the community around you because you have taken time to listen to God's advice. We have a group of people at Beautiful Savior who seem to practice the disciplines of Lent during the whole year. You may not be aware of them or what they do, but I would like to tell you about the Altar Guild and perhaps share with you the joy that comes from gaining direction from God for works of love. These are the people who take care of a part of God's house each and every week without fail. Their work begins with prayer. One day during the week and on Sunday mornings they come quietly, with reverence into the sanctuary to prepare God's house for worship, and the table for the meal he shares with us. The linens are carefully hand washed and ironed every week. The silver is washed and polished. The candles and candlelighters are filled with oil, cleaned, and the brass is polished. The supplies are checked and the meal is prepared. The offering plates are polished, the processional cross is dusted. On Sunday morning the table is prepared and ready for the entire community to share the grace of God. The Altar Guild does their work of love. They are able to feel God's presence and communicate quietly with him as they prepare the sanctuary for worship and the celebration of the Eucharistic Feast. During this season of Lent, think about and pray about becoming a part of this ministry!
